Trauma-informed therapy is important, but Social Justice-informed therapy is even more important. One cannot truly do fully trauma-informed therapy without understanding the trauma of Social Injustice.

Welcome to A New Door Therapy

Many find starting therapy requires stepping out of their comfort zone.  In this moment, you might be excited and hopeful about the possibility of feeling better, or terrified and discouraged because you’ve been struggling for what feels like forever.   Together we can help you to create space for the life you want, building resiliency and new possibilities.

Approaches to Therapy

Gestalt

In Gestalt therapy, we work with your emotions as a pathway for understanding and wholeness.  Gestalt is a process of exploration, self-knowledge, challenge and compassion. As you bring the challenges of your life, we will explore how you have developed coping mechanisms, or creative adjustments that allowed you to survive in a difficult context.   Through experiments, art, and somatic work, we will bring to light new understanding, compassion and choice. I’ll assist you in finding that you have within you the resources to live with more joy and less regret!

sex and relationship Therapy

Relationships can be the most rewarding, and the most challenging parts of our lives. Our attachment to romantic partners can be life giving and affirming, or it was be a source of pain. In relationship therapy, we identify the cycles you’re trapped in and help you to work together to find a new dance. I work with same and opposite sex couples in open or closed partnerships. Whether you are rebuilding a relationship after infidelity, seeking support for coparenting or looking to communicate better, I’ll work with you to find the tools to allow you to find your way from struggle to renewed connection. I also work with couples as they decide what their future holds and can offer support and strategies to those who decide to separate. Relationship therapy can be a gift even in the end of a partnership, as it helps us to understand our wounded places and emotional landmines, allowing us to move on more open to healthy relationship with a former partner and future possibilities. I work with couples facing issues including: infidelity, blended family challenges, sexual problems, infertility, parenting, communication and conflict.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of trauma and painful life experiences. Using eye movements or other methods to engage both sides of the brain, EMDR enables clients to move from an emotionally charged experience of remembering trauma to a place where the past stays in the past. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

internal family systems

Internal Family Systems works with different aspects of self or parts of our personality.  IFS is particularly helpful in understanding the places where we become stuck and repeat patterns that feel unhelpful and sometimes painful.  Using your own internal resources of courage, creativity and curiosity, IFS allows us to find the places where you are struggling, to understand the function of those parts and to create space for healing pain and moving forward into new possibilities.

Knowing oneself comes from attending with compassionate curiosity to what is happening within.        -Gabor Maté
